Instead of investing a few thousand dollars to regularly paint the beams over a period of four decades, the condo had to shell out $500,000 to hire a crane company to replace the steel beams and remedy the concrete panels and large cooling tower they supported.

Tragically, Florida’s Surfside condo collapse in 2021 serves as yet another horrific reminder of the importance of regular and frequent structural assessments of coastal buildings of all types. Condos and other oceanfront structures are impacted by high humidity, salt air, high water tables, and seawater flooding. This, combined with under-maintenance, generates the perfect storm for tragedies to unfold.
